Role Of Rti In Creating A Corruption Free Society



Corruption is one of the major problems that exist in several government bodies and departments. The red tape bureaucracy and thriving corruption make it difficult for citizens of India to get answers for their grievances. Therefore, taking into account the interest of the common public and to eradicate corruption from the government institutions and departments, Indian Government incorporated the Right to Information Act in 2005. 

The inclusion of this exemplary right in Indian constitution was highly acknowledged by public critics and organizations. The right to information act gave immense power and confidence to the masses. It made governmental departments and authorities more agile and answerable to the concerns of the public.


Here’s how Right to Information Act contributing to its best to foster a corruption-free society: 

  1. Provides access to the pool of information: One of the greatest features of the Right to Information act is the provision to access the required information. Citizens can get access to the required information from public authorities by exercising this right. All one has to do is file a right to information act online application, provide details about the department, information one wishes to access and pay a nominal fee for the same. However, there are certain rules and regulations that govern the information that one can reach. The information requested must be in tandem with various parameters such as protecting the integrity of the nation, not provoking unrest or violence etc.   

  2. Makes authorities Answerable: RTI online in India gives immense power and authority to the citizens, it makes the authorities answerable to the application for Right to information act online. Once received the application, the public authorities and government departments are liable to provide the desired information within 28 days. If one is not able to provide the required information the institution or department is deemed to provide a logical and reasonable answer for the same.

Today, the departments are very particular about the documentation and necessary process. They are very well aware that one RTI application filed by any citizen of India can unveil their corruption and flaws in the system.

It encourages the involvement of citizens of the country and enables them to be a part of the development process.  After all, Right to information is the basic and fundamental rights of every citizen and one must exercise the same to eradicate prevailing corruption in the society.
